Erik Hanberg

On November 23. 2009, we had a guest speaker name Erik Hanberg. I really like the guest speaker because he was very prepared with things he wanted to talk about whatever things he do. He was even prepared with powerpoint name "Living and working in the Virtual World: with an emphasis on the Working Part". He start talking about the two kinds of work, and scalable work. The two kinds of work are hourly, and salary. These two kinds of work deals with most jobs, wages are crapped by hour available, and other people with the same job earn similar amounts. He actually focused more on scalable work. He asked what kinds of scalable work is out there because scalable work has few kinds of jobs, there are almost no limits, pay can be "spike" and pay varies widely between individuals. Later on, he also talked about the "black swan", and he made funny comments about how he wrote 9 novels and J.K. Rowling wrote 7 novels, but only one of them is a billionaire. I really liked how he was very organized/prepared, and very inspiring. I am very appreciate his visit and hopefully he will be success with his job/career.

Scavenger Hunt

In last class, we had a group online scavenger hunt assignment. This assignment was to collect as many items that are on the internet by searching the key points. When I saw this assignment, I thought I would be able to find all these information on Google. However, it was little difficult to look for right information because I had to type out specific keywords that are similar to what I am looking for. My group had to split the work because we only had two laptops. We also did not have that much of time, but we found many informations.

In addition, this assignment was very interesting because without the internet "GOOGLE", I do not think I can ever find this informations and it will take so much time to just look for one answer. Nowadays, I do not think people can live without using internet.

Convergence

Convergence:
*Convergence (telecommunications): the combination of multiple services through lines of telecommunication from a single provider.
*Convergence (routing protocol): The updating of routers’ topography information using dynamic protocols.
*Convergence (evolutionary computing): A means of modeling the tendency for genetic characteristics of populations to stabilize over time.
*Technological convergence: A trend where some technologies having distinct functionalities evolve to technologies that overlaps.

When I try to look up term Convergence, there were a lot of different meanings. However, I remember we talked about the telecommunication about convergence during class on Monday. So, I looked up more detail on telecommunications convergence. Telecommunications convergence is concept dating back to AT&T in 1928 but has evolved in the 21st century to dominate the market positioning of telecoms operators. Convergence can also refer to separate technologies such as voice, data, and video that now share resources and interact with other.

Today, I think we are surrounded by a multiple ways of convergent media world where all modes of communication and information are continually reforming to adapt to the enduring demands of technologies.

Online document vs. Physical document

Document is a written or printed-paper furnishing information or evidence, and its legal or official paper. However, even though documents are all same, there is a difference between online document and physical document.

Online document do not really have publisher name because since anyone can network and publish, it is hard to keep track who wrote what.  Sometimes, the information that is online is false information because it does not really tell where they got the information or references. When people upload some documents online, it does not hold the document for longtime because somehow the website can be gone/deleted/ or erase. On the other hand, people can update faster without paying any money to publish online and provide documents.

Physical document shows the author, and publisher name(s). Since the document is printed, the information is accurate, and also has reference pages on the back. Physical document can have for longtime because it’s printed. On the other hand, it takes time to update, and it also cost money to print the documents out.

Vanity Search

I haven't done a vanity search in a long time. The last time I looked my own name was when I was in High School. When I use to have Xanga or Myspace, I forgot what I use for the URL name. I typed in Google to find out my website name and that was the last time I checked. Recently, I check my name on Google Search, I could not really find my name. I try everything possible. I try my middle name, where I live, what school I go to. However, my name is so common and even Google Images had different persons picture but same last time. It was interesting typing my own name to research. I do not really like to show my information to other people that I do not know. So it might be hard to look for my information on Google Search because I made my websites private.

Guest Speaker - Mark Briggs 10/19/2009

Mark Briggs is author of Journalism 2.0 and CEO, and Co-founder of Serra Media. Mark Briggs and Glenn Thomas developed the Serra Media in 2007. As technology increases, they have experienced on building award-winning interactive projects for news sites, developing leading-edge technology for the world’s largest software company and working with the top advertising agencies on rich media campaigns.

On October 19 2009, Mark Briggs talked about how the businesses are expanding by creating a social mapping platform that allows newspaper to construct the websites without of local news. Because of how people are changing the way they receiving the news and other information, old fashion newspapers might slowly disappears. Even the website is hard to keep up the way it is right now, because when the revenue goes down then expense will go down too. Which means, there will be less workers and less local news to find through the newspapers or online.

I think Serra Media was good idea to powering local publisher, building community for local news, and shopping and information. I really like the local shopping blog because nowadays, every people wants good product with cheaper price. People can immediately search what they want and they will know where to go shopping locally for the perfect deal.

experience of creating first HTML

HTML, which stands for Hyper Text Markup Language, is a markup language used to structure text and multimedia documents and to set up hypertext links between documents, used extensive on the World Wild Web. My first experience of creating HTML was from "Xanga". My first time creating personal website, Xanga is a website that hosts weblogs, photo-blogs, and social networking profiles. I started off with basic information and with nothing created or uploaded on my first website, Xanga. However, as I was learning from my sister about HTML, I start learning from the beginning how you start with the HTML, head, and body. I did not understand why I have to always have start and end tags. I was very confused, but at the same time it was also interesting. I wanted to create my website as professional and have more information like upload more photos, music’s. I wanted to make my personal website to be attractive to other people or friends. As I am writing the title, I learned how to change the font size, and to bold. I found out that there are no limits with uploading photos, or videos. Nowadays, the new technologies are always out there, even re-learning the basic HTML was so much fun and reminded me of Junior high school year when I use to create my website.

How "news" changed because of the online publication?

Newspapers are the most repeatedly published on daily or weekly basis. On newspaper, it includes news information and advertises, and it usually focuses on the one of specific geographic area where the most of readers live. The newspaper has information on political events, crime, business, art/entertainment, society and sports. However, throughout the current recession, online publicans are growing dramatically and old fashion of newspaper is declining speedy.

Since technology is increasing, people might change the way they receiving the news and other information. There is many ways to obtain news, by television, radio, newspapers, and online publication. Unfortunately, online publications are eliminating the traditional print newspapers, but people still do receives the print newspapers.

One of the reasons why old fashion print newspapers are falling is because of the speed that people are receiving news. Nowadays, people save money by receiving the news through the online publication. People can find out what is happening in their community or country through online publication and people do not have to wait for the night news to discover about the community.

Strengths Vs. Weakness on "E-mail"

The internet is a global data communications system. One of the most world widely used in internet application is E-mail, which it exchanges the digital messages that is designed for human to use. As a computer net work increases each year, the technology has affected society and its surrounding in number of ways. However, E-mail has a strengths and weaknesses.

One of the most great part of E-mail is inexpensive. Which means, E-mail is free and allows to send a message to a large number of recipients for less traditional postal rates. E-mails can also organize in different category by name, date, and subjects. It is very easy to ignore or delete the junk E-mails. One of the personal favorite part of E-mail is that when you write down other persons E-mail address, and if the address is wrong, then E-mail will come back and announce that this E-mail address is wrong.

In addition, as internet develops E-mail also have Weaknesses. Occasionally, people should not relying on an E-mail a lot, because most of large E-mails takes long time to send or it might not go to the person. Since everyone knows how to use internet, there is a lake of personal tough of spoken or face to face communication. However, E-mail is another fast way to connect with people all over the world.
